Hiking Leadership Training

Welcome to your Hiking Leadership Training!

The Hiking Leadership Training (HLT) is designed to train teachers and youth workers how to plan, organize, and lead fun and safe hikes with youth. Novice and experienced hikers will gain new leadership and facilitation skills. Some of the topics covered during the training include: fun games for the trail, leave no trace principles, the natural history of open spaces, risk management, meal planning, navigation, and more.

Snacks will be included and participants are expected to wear footwear appropriate for hiking. Bay Area Wilderness Training can provide boots upon request. Participants are not expected to buy new clothing for this training.

Completing the HLT grants you partial access to our gear libraries. If you want to borrow camping or backpacking gear you will need to complete one of the Frontcountry, Wilderness, or Camping at the Presidio Leadership Training courses. If you want to borrow snowshoes, please sign up for our annual Snowshoe course.

We will be following COVID-19 safety protocols. It will be required that all participants and instructors wear face coverings and stay physically distant throughout the day. We will be reaching out with more information about and the precautions we are taking closer to the course date.

Bay Area Wilderness Training Course Cancellation Policy: Cancellations received more than 30 days prior to the first day of any workshop allow for a refund of 75% of the total registration fees already paid. If notice of cancellation is given to BAWT 29 to 14 days prior to the first day you may receive a 25% refund. No refunds will be issued for cancellations 13 days or less prior to the first day. A full refund may be given in the event that we cancel a course, unless the participant cancels first. Any course materials received before the start of the course must be returned before you will receive a refund or you will be charged for them. You will be charged a fee for all unreturned course materials.
