Adventures for Kids is Bay Area Wilderness Training's adventure fundraising platform. Through this platform, we encourage you to take your adventure and use it for good by raising dollars to support increasing opportunities for Bay Area youth to access the outdoors.

Because of your willingness to take an adventure and make it more, we're able to continue serving more than 300 community organizations with low-cost and no-cost resources in order to get Bay Area youth outdoors. This means nearly 10,000 young people have the resources they need to get out and have meaningful outdoor experiences. Need more inspiration? As an Individual Adventurer you have the option to choose your own adventure. Running a marathon, going on a backpacking trip, climbing Half Dome or another peak, these are just some of the ways you can turn an adventure into dollars and support for Bay Area youth. Frequently Asked Questions
Is transportation included in a BAWT planned adventure?
Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from any BAWT planned adventures. We strongly encourage carpooling. For BAWT planned adventures see your Orientation Packet for more information about arranging this with your fellow climbers.
Are BAWT planned adventures only for groups, or can an individual participate?
We focus on working with groups of four or more to create custom adventures, targeting companies and affiliation groups in the Bay Area. However, we can still try to accommodate individual climbers by placing them on an already-formed group trip. There is no guarantee that this option will be available, but please contact us immediately if you are an individual looking to participate.
How much money am I responsible for raising?
That depends on the type of adventure. If it's a BAWT planned adventure using a guide service or BAWT instructor Fundraising goals range from $2,000 to $4,000 for each participant. The amount depends on many factors including the length of the trip and the location. In general, backcountry treks will have a goal of $2,000 while alpine climbs start at $3,000. Let us know what you’re interested in and we’ll work with you to come up with a goal.
Can I raise that much money in a few months?
Yes, you can! Throw a party, a silent auction, raffle or poker tournament. Ask friends, family, and coworkers. Write handwritten notes, make phone calls and follow up. Explain the cause. Tell people your fundraising goal. Then ask again. We understand that raising this amount of money can be a bit intimidating, but once you get started, you’ll be surprised at how much fun you’ll have. Consult your Orientation Packet for ideas and inspiration from past climbers and professional fundraisers alike and be sure to contact us if you have questions.
For a BAWT planned adventure, what else do I pay for?
Participants are responsible for transportation to and from the climb, any lodging before or after the trip, lunches and, in some cases, dinners throughout the trip. If you are going on a climbing trip, plan to spend about $100 tipping your guide(s).
Is tipping my guide really necessary?
If you are participating in an alpine climb, then yes; otherwise, no. Your guides are experts in a very specialized set of skills. Their job is to keep you safe on the mountain, and if possible, help you achieve the summit. One thing they are not is well paid. It is customary to tip the guides 10% to 20% of the commercial value of your trip. You should plan to spend about $100 tipping your guide(s).
Do I need to have experience for a BAWT planned adventure?
For BAWT planned adventures most of our adventures require no previous experience, though backpacking, camping and climbing experience are all helpful. Each BAWT planned trip includes professional instruction from guides. If you are climbing an alpine peak, you will receive instruction in the mountaineering techniques that you will use during your ascent. All alpine climbs start with training day(s) that will help you prepare mentally and physically for the challenges you will face on the mountain. For the backcountry treks, your guides will instruct you in all areas of backcountry travel. We want the experience to be fun AND educational.
How should I train for a BAWT planned adventure?
BAWT planned adventures are selected for their rare beauty, classic routes and physical challenge. They require endurance and mental stamina. In general, you should be working out at least four times a week, and at least one workout per week should have you exerting yourself for several hours.
